Media Pressure Group, Media Against Impunity Nigeria (MAIN NGR) has said the purveyors of fake news in Nigeria should be tried since their actions of consistently spreading fake news can disrupt the Nigerian polity and generate chaos in the country.
This development is coming following the uproar generated by the fake news attributed to former aviation minister, Mr. Femi Fani Kayode, and Afenifere Chieftain, Mr. Yinka Odumaikin, that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC)has surrounded and raided the residence of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mr. Walter Onnoghen.
In a press statement made available to journalists in Washington DC on Tuesday, the Executive Director of the Group, Prince Meshack Idehen, said the dangers of fake news will take a heavy toll on Nigeria Nigerians if not checked on time.
He said MAIN NGR was calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Femi Fani Kayode and his partners in the fake news spreading business, because it has gradually become a recurrent pattern with the ex-aviation minister.
According to the MAIN NGR executive director, “spreading very fake and false news that the EFCC has raided the residence of Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen when nothing like that ever took place is a crime that must not go unpunished”,
It would be recalled that the EFCC itself had said it will file a libel suit against Femi Fani-Kayode, Yinka Odumakin and other purveyors of the evil news”, over claims that the agency raided the house of Walter Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
According to the commission, the purported raiding of the residence of Onnoghne and his purported arrest were not only a figment of the imagination of the purveyor of the fake news, but an evil machination by the creator and carriers of the news aimed at creating anarchy in the country.
“For the record, the EFCC never went to the house of the CJN for arrest neither was invitation extended to him”, the commission explained.
Femi Fani Kayode, had on his verified twitter page, said “the has EFCC surrounded the home of CJN Onnoghen and why are they seeking to arrest him?”.
“These people want Nigeria to burn! Buhari call off your dogs before it is too late! This is a democracy and not a gestapo state! In the name of God let this madness stop”, Kayode had falsely written.
However, while the EFCC has come out to deny the allegations and fake news, the commission also said Fani-Kayode, Yinka Odumakin and other purveyors of the evil news must be ready to defend their actions in the court of law as the EFCC will file libel suit against them without further delay.
